The Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah) is
one of the varieties of the Belgian Shepherd Dog. In the United States, the American
Kennel Club registers them as a separate breed. The Belgian Malinois is a medium size dog of exceptional beauty and working ability used for many purposes, including herding, tracking agility, obedience, and police work. |
To the inexperienced eye, they may seem to resemble the German Shepherd Dog, but upon closer inspection, many differences may be seen including size, bone structure, color, and head and ear shape.
The Belgian is generally a lighter, quicker, more agile dog. They are a "high energy" dog. There is almost nothing a Malinois won't try if encouraged by his master. These dogs excel at obedience, tracking, agility, flyball, herding, showing, Schutzhund and other protection sports, search and rescue, police work, and just about anything else a dog can do. There are even Malinois who lure course! Professional trainers describe these dogs as having high "play drive" which means that everything is a game to them, and they love games!
An excellent place to see Malinois is at a local dog show. Don't approach handlers waiting to go into the ring, however, since they are usually very preoccupied at this time. Instead, wait until the class is over and then introduce yourself. Most owners and handlers will be more than happy to talk with you once the "main event" is over.

Dare![]() |
Dare, whos registered name is Moonquests Daretu, CGC, AX, AXJ, AAD, EAC, EGC, EJC, RS-E, RJ-O, RG-O, Herding Instinct Tested is Pennys first Malinois. Named Daretu because Penny wanted to "dare to" try new and different things with her dog. Dare, a serious thinker, is easy to train and a great partner on the agility course. Not everything is serious for Dare however, her nickname is Dare Bear and her favorite toys are the Boomer Ball (one of those large plastic indestructible balls), Frisbee and Tennis Balls. Bred by Allyson Olson, Dare, an honest worker, usually gives her all and then some to any task that Penny asks. |
Corsair![]() |
Corsair is a re-home who was 3 years old when he came to live with Penny. He has proven to be a wonderful companion, protector, puppy-sitter, snuggle bunny, and an auto theft deterrent! While agile, his early shifting from home to home has caused him to over bond with Penny which makes working at a distance in agility difficult for both. Rather than fight natural instincts Penny and Corsair hope to head to the obedience rings in the near future. |
Zane![]() |
Moonquest Texas Tinsel answers to the call name of Zane after Lindas favorite western author, Zane Grey. Full brother to Cris, this eye catching young male is the dog Linda has been waiting a lifetime for. Eager to please and willing to do anything once he understands what is being asked of him, Zane already has several agility legs towards NADAC and AKC Novice titles. The building blocks for solid performances in tracking and obedience are also being laid with Zane right now so look for new titles in those areas next year. |
Cris![]() |
Cris better known as Angel Cakes is Pennys youngest Malinois. While not on the puppy list for Cris litter Penny fell in love with this girl while puppy testing. Known to the general public as Champion Moonquest Christmas Magic, this Malinois is a wonderful example of balance. In temperament, drive, structure, Cris demonstrates overall balance and a magnetic personality. Finishing her Championship with 4 majors, 18 points in only 8 shows Cris is headed on to performance activities. Pretty is as pretty does is Pennys motto and Cris is out to prove shes pretty beyond any doubt! Cris motto is stolen from the Nike folks Just Do It! The polish is being put on their agility work and the foundation for competition obedience and tracking has been started so watch out for exciting results from this girl. |
